Sarah Elizabeth Mills, 21, passed away Friday, April 24, 2020 while in-route to work at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Montgomery, AL. At the time of her passing, Sarah was a student pursuing her nursing degree at Auburn University at Montgomery and was scheduled to graduate and take part in the time-honored nursing tradition of being pinned within a few short weeks.

Sarah was overjoyed that she was able to pursue her nursing degree at AUM. She loved learning and thrived in every aspect of her nursing education. She welcomed every opportunity to learn, grow, and share her knowledge selflessly. Helping others was an innate passion Sarah held, and she found her calling when she chose a career in nursing, or some may say it chose her. She was elated about her upcoming career and “dream job” as an ER nurse in a level-1 trauma unit in Huntsville, AL, which she had accepted upon graduation. Sarah also had aspirations of continuing her education and career by becoming an Emergency Medicine Nurse Practitioner.

In addition to her commitment to nursing school and working 30 hours a week, Sarah also volunteered her time for the betterment of others. She volunteered with; the Jean Dean Reading is Fundamental Foundation, which emphasizes the importance of reading as the first step in furthering one’s knowledge and education; the All for Children Organization which supports children with dyslexia; and Habitat for Humanity, which aims to help make the world a more livable place for the less fortunate. All of these exemplify Sarah’s drive to go above and beyond in every aspect of her Christian life.

Sarah was very driven and goal-oriented, and it comes as no surprise that she pioneered the athletic student training program her junior year of high school, was dual-enrolled in high school and college her senior year, graduated with honors from Crisp County High School Class of 2016, and was a recipient of the Spirit of Auburn Scholarship.

In honor of Sarah and her passion for helping others through nursing, her friends and family have established a scholarship in her name at her alma mater, the AUM College of Nursing and Health Sciences.
